چکیده

The Smithsonian far-infrared spectrometer is a remote sensing Fourier transform spectrometer that measures the midand far-infrared thermal emission spectrum of the stratosphere from balloon and aircraft platforms. The spectrometer has had nine successful balloon flights from 1987 to 1994, flying at float altitudes of 36–39 km and collecting 131 hours of midlatitude stratospheric limb spectra. The spectrometer also flew on a NASA DC-8 aircraft, as part of the second Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition (AASE-II), collecting 140 hours of overhead spectra at latitudes ranging from the equator to the north pole. We present here a brief description of the instrument, a discussion of data reduction procedures, an estimation of both random and systematic errors, an outline of the procedure for retrieving mixing ratio profiles, and an explanation of the method of deriving temperature and pressure from the farand mid-infrared spectra.

Safire-a Measurements during the Esabc Campaign

SAFIRE-A (Spectroscopy of the Atmosphere using Far InfraRed Emission – Airborne) is a Far Infrared Fourier Transform spectrometer operating onboard the M-55 Geophysica stratospheric aircraft. The spectrometer is one of the instruments participating to the scientific chemical flights of the ESABC (ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon campaigns) campaigns held in July and October 2002 from ...

Isotopic composition of stratospheric ozone

Using recently measured rates for isotopic variants of the ozone formation reaction , we derive expressions for the enrichment of symmetric and asymmetric and in stratospheric ozone and calculate total enrichments of 123‰ and 107‰ for and , respectively. We compare the calculations with measurements made with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory far-infrared spectrometer during seven ballo...

Isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor: Measurements and photochemistry

We present a photochemical model describing the changes in the isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor that result from methane oxidation and reactions with O( ). We then compare model calculations with measurements made with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory far-infrared spectrometer during seven balloon flights that took place between 1989 and 1997. The agreement between the...

Measurement of stratospheric HBr using high resolution far infrared spectroscopy

Far infrared spectral features of HBr have been observed in the stratospheric emission spectrum using a balloon borne high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer equipped with a high sensitivity detector specially designed for this purpose. The value of 1.6 + 0.6 parts per trillion in volume for the HBr mixing ratio has been retrieved, from the global-fit analysis of 12! spectra, in the 25 3...
